Prudhoe
Skip Prudhoe as a base: no visitor beds in town. Use it as a 2–3 h castle stop from Newcastle, or sleep in Wylam 3 miles east.
Prudhoe is a small Tyne valley town 11 miles west of Newcastle, with one real sight: Prudhoe Castle, an 11th-century English Heritage keep that held out against Scots sieges. It has no visitor accommodation, so most travellers pass through by train or bus, or sleep in neighbouring Wylam. Half a day covers the town; the rest of the valley — Hadrian's Wall country, Corbridge and Hexham — is the reason to be out this way.

Getting around
The town is walkable, but the castle, station and countryside sights are spread out and the valley villages need wheels. Trains from Newcastle run every 30 min to Prudhoe station (20 min) and on to Hexham and Carlisle; Wylam has its own station. Bus 10/10B from Newcastle runs every 20–30 min along Front St; bus 684 runs hourly to Heddon-on-the-Wall, Wylam, Ovingham, Corbridge and Hexham. Taxis: Castle Cars (+44 1661 834800) and NT Cabs (+44 7905 299829).

Safety
- Prudhoe Castle is closed in winter: Apr–Oct only, and October closes at 4PM — check the English Heritage site before travelling.
- George Stephenson's Birthplace opens only on occasional event days; do not build a trip around it.
- Prudhoe has no visitor accommodation in town: book Wylam, Heddon or Newcastle first.
