Oudewater
Go as a half-day stop between Utrecht and Gouda: 3–4 hours covers the Waag, the Rope Museum and the market square. Sleep here only if you want a quiet polder base.
Oudewater is a small Hollandse IJssel town of about 10,000 people, halfway between Utrecht and Gouda, with city rights from 1265 and a 16th–17th century rope-making past. Its centre is compact and walkable: the witches' weigh house (Waag), a rope museum, a 1588 city hall and roughly 120 listed monuments. Most travellers see it in three to four hours on the way between two bigger bases; it also works as a calm overnight stop for cyclists and walkers in the Green Heart.

- The Rope Museum closes in winter; special openings cost extra (about €25 (≈ US$30), €50 (≈ US$60) for a weekend evening) and must be arranged in advance.
- The Waag is closed on Mondays from April to November and runs Friday–Sunday only in the other months.
- Buses from Utrecht, Gouda and Woerden run twice an hour or half-hourly; check the last departure before an evening return.
- Oudewater has no train station: the nearest are Woerden, Utrecht and Gouda, each with a bus link.
