Holt is a small Georgian market town in north Norfolk, rebuilt in brick, stone and flint after a 1708 fire. It works as a base rather than a destination: the town centre is a 20-minute walk end to end, and the coast at Cley, Blakeney, Sheringham and Wells-next-the-Sea is 10–25 minutes away by car or bus. Most visitors use it for one or two nights while exploring the north Norfolk coast and the North Norfolk Railway (the Poppy Line).

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk: Market Place to the railway station is about 1.5 miles (25–30 min) and most visitors drive or take a taxi for that leg. Sanders Coaches run buses from Holt to Norwich, Cromer, Sheringham, Wells-next-the-Sea and Aylsham; services are infrequent on Sundays and in winter. A car makes the coast and villages much easier. Regional Cycle Route 30 passes about 1.5 miles from town.

Holt is a low-crime small town; the real risks are coastal weather, tides and narrow roads without pavements. Walk facing traffic on country lanes and check tide times before walking on beaches.
  • The railway station is about 1.5 miles from the town centre, not in it: allow 25–30 min on foot or book a taxi.
  • Buses to the coast and villages are sparse on Sundays and in winter: check times before you rely on them.
  • Mobile signal is 4G from EE, O2 and Vodafone but weak or absent from Three; 5G has not reached the area.
  • Many coastal cafés and attractions close or cut hours from November to March.
