Coupeville is a small Victorian seaport on Penn Cove, in the middle of Whidbey Island, and the core of Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve. The historic blocks take two hours; the rest of the trip is waterfront, farmland and two coastal forts. It is a stop on a Whidbey Island drive, not a destination on its own for a week.

Getting around

The historic centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Parking on Front Street is tight; use the overflow lot at the Coupeville Library, two blocks uphill. Island Transit buses are free and link Coupeville with Oak Harbor, Clinton, Langley, Freeland and Greenbank; a car is still the practical way to reach Fort Casey, Fort Ebey and Ebey's Landing.

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are wet, windy waterfront weather, uneven wharf and fort surfaces, and driving WA-20 in the dark with deer and cyclists on the shoulder.
  • Front Street parking fills on summer weekends; park at the library and walk down.
  • The Port Townsend ferry uses small vessels and vehicle space is limited: reserve ahead for Friday afternoons, weekends and holidays.
  • Restaurant kitchens in town close early; check last orders before a late arrival.
  • Penn Cove weather changes fast: wind and rain even in summer.
