Pai is a small valley town on the Mae Hong Son Loop, 135 km and about 3 h by minivan from Chiang Mai over a winding mountain road. The town itself has no headline sight; people come for the valley — waterfalls, hot springs, a canyon, hill-tribe villages — and for cheap bungalows and a slow pace. Three nights covers the loop and the day trips without rushing.

Getting around
The centre is walkable in 15 minutes. For waterfalls, the canyon, the hot springs and the villages you need wheels: motorbikes from about ฿100–250 a day and bicycles ฿40–100, rented along the main street with a passport or cash deposit. Motorbike and 4WD taxis cover short hops. The road to Chiang Mai (Rte 1095) is steep and winding; ride conservatively and expect rain-slick bends in the wet season.

Watch out
Safety
- Rte 1095 to Chiang Mai is a mountain road with frequent accidents, more in the rainy season: take motion-sickness pills and avoid night driving.
- Riding a motorbike without a valid licence or IDP can void your travel insurance and lead to a fine at police checkpoints.
- Burning-season smoke from Feb to Apr can cut visibility and air quality in the valley.
- Rooms sell out in the cool season (Oct–Feb) and around Thai holidays: book ahead.
- Cannabis shops are legal but heavily regulated; buying or carrying it across borders is a serious offence.
