Creston is a town of about 5,600 people at the south end of Kootenay Lake, on Highway 3 between Cranbrook and the Kootenay crossings. It is a farming valley: cherries, grain elevators, a brewery, and a 7,000-hectare wetland on the Kootenay River flats. The downtown is small enough to walk; the rest of the valley needs a car or a bike. It works as one night on a road trip, or two if you want the wetland and the winery at an unhurried pace.

Getting around

Downtown is a short walk end to end. The rest of the town and the valley are spread out, so a car or a bike is the practical choice. BC Transit runs a weekday route inside Creston and a twice-weekly route to Cranbrook (about 2 h). Taxis: Creston Cabs.

Watch out

Safety

Creston is a small town and street crime is low. The real risks are driving: wildlife on Highway 3 at dawn and dusk, winter ice, and summer wildfire smoke that can shut the highway.
  • Creston does not observe daylight saving time: in summer it is one hour behind Cranbrook and the rest of BC. Check your bookings against local time.
  • The US border at Rykerts/Porthill is a small crossing: check hours before you plan on it.
  • Summer wildfire smoke can close trails and highways in the Kootenays; check DriveBC and the BC wildfire dashboard before a long drive.
  • The wildlife area is a flood plain with dykes and water channels: stay on the trails, and expect mosquitoes in June.
