Getting around

Downtown, Midtown and Uptown are a flat grid and walkable; the Walnut Street Bridge to City Island is closed to cars. Rabbit Transit (formerly CAT) buses cover the city and airport, most routes hourly, with schedules on Google Maps and the Transit app. Meter parking is enforced Mon–Sat 8:00–19:00 at about $3/hour; garages cost more. A car helps for Hershey, Carlisle and the Civil War Museum.

Safety

Downtown Harrisburg is fine on foot in daylight and busy evenings; the main annoyances are panhandling near the train station and quiet blocks after dark. Use normal city sense, keep to lit streets and take a rideshare at night.
  • Meter parking is enforced Mon–Sat 8:00–19:00; garages charge around $4 for 30 minutes or less.
  • Some blocks east of downtown and around the train station are quiet at night; stay on lit streets and use a taxi or rideshare after dark.
  • Stage on Herr at the Midtown Arts Center is reported closed as of April 2026: check before planning a show.
  • The Farm Show in January fills hotels and parking lots for a week: book ahead or avoid.
