Give Hythe one full day, not a base: pier train and ferry, Calshot or Exbury, then back to Southampton or the New Forest.
Hythe is a small Waterside town on the west shore of Southampton Water, at the edge of the New Forest. Its real draw is the 640 m pier with its 1922 electric railway and the foot ferry to Southampton, plus Calshot Spit and Exbury Gardens a short drive south. There is no mainline station, so most visitors come by ferry, bus or car and stay one night or pass through.

The village centre is walkable in 15 minutes. The pier railway runs the length of the pier to the ferry, and the ferry crosses to Southampton (foot passengers only). Buses run to Southampton and around the Waterside; Calshot, Lepe and Exbury need a car or a seasonal bus. Hythe has no mainline train station.
