Montague is the service town for eastern Kings County, about 2,000 people on the Montague River, and the largest centre east of Charlottetown. It is not a sight in itself: it is a cheap, quiet base for the Roma at Three Rivers historic site, the start of the Confederation Trail and the beaches and wharves of the east end. One night is enough; two if you cycle.

Getting around

A car is close to essential: sights are 5–25 km apart and rural roads have no pavement or bus. The Confederation Trail runs through town for walking and cycling. Taxis exist but are few; book ahead for evenings.

Watch out

Safety

Montague is a small, low-crime town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are rural driving, deer and cyclists on dark roads, and cold water on the beaches: swim where locals do and watch for rip currents.
  • Most seasonal businesses, including Roma at Three Rivers and the Garden of the Gulf Museum, close from late September or October to June: check dates before you build a day around them.
  • Distances look short on the map but rural roads are slow and dark at night; avoid cycling the highway after dusk.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the eastern back roads.
  • Restaurant kitchens in town close early, often by 20:00–21:00 in shoulder season.
