Washington Township in Morris County is a rural, spread-out township whose main village is Long Valley. There is no train station and almost no lodging, so it works as a quiet car-based base for Schooley's Mountain County Park and Patriots' Path hiking, or as a half-day stop between Morristown and the Delaware Water Gap. Most travellers see it in a few hours, not days.

A low-crime rural township; the real risks are driving (dark roads, deer, winter ice) and trail conditions, not crime. 911 works everywhere.
  • No rail service: do not plan on arriving by train.
  • Rural roads are dark and deer cross at dusk; drive slowly after sunset.
  • Winter ice on park and trail paths; some park facilities close seasonally (check).
