Dunkeld is a small Highland-edge village in Perth and Kinross, on the River Tay, joined to Birnam by Telford's seven-arch bridge. It was rebuilt in the early 18th century after the 1689 battle and is the best-preserved example of that townscape in Scotland. The cathedral, riverside paths and a wildlife loch are the draw; the A9 bypasses the village, so it stays quiet.

Getting around

The village is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. The railway station is in Birnam, across the bridge. Buses run from Perth via Birnam and Dunkeld to Aberfeldy. A car helps for Loch of the Lowes, the Hermitage and Blairgowrie; the bus over the A923 to Blairgowrie has been withdrawn.

Watch out

Safety

Dunkeld is a quiet, low-crime village and safe to walk by day or evening. The real risks are traffic on the bridge, wet and muddy riverside paths, and fast-changing weather: carry a waterproof and tell someone your route on longer walks.
  • The bridge has pavements on both sides but carries steady traffic: cross with care.
  • Intercity coaches along the A9 mostly bypass Dunkeld; only about one Citylink service a day stops, from Edinburgh towards Inverness.
  • Mobile signal is 4G from EE, O2 and Vodafone but poor on Three; no 5G in the area.
  • Some cafés, shops and the cathedral museum keep short or seasonal hours: check before you build a day around them.
