Sibu sits where the Rajang and Igan rivers meet in central Sarawak, and it works as the gateway to the upper Rajang. Most travellers pass through on the way to Kapit or Belaga, or break a Kuching–Miri bus run. The centre is compact and walkable, the food is Foochow-Chinese, and the express boat wharf is a few minutes from the market.

Downtown is compact and flat: walk it. Grab is the easy way to the airport and outlying malls; local taxis are mostly unmetered, so agree the fare first. Local buses are non-air-conditioned and run infrequently.

Safety

Sibu is a working river town, not a resort: petty theft is reported around the central market, so keep valuables out of sight and use Grab after dark.
  • Petty theft is reported around Sibu Central Market: keep bags zipped and in front of you.
  • Taxis are usually unmetered — fix the price before you get in.
  • River boats to Kapit and Belaga can be cancelled or delayed by low water or heavy rain; keep a buffer day.
