Kotka is Finland's southeastern port city at the mouth of the Kymi river, about 1 h 30 min from Helsinki by car on the E18. Its centre sits on Kotkansaari island and is walkable in an afternoon. The draw is maritime heritage: the Maritime Centre Vellamo with the icebreaker Tarmo, the imperial fishing lodge at Langinkoski, and summer boats out to the outer archipelago. Most travellers see it as a stop between Helsinki and Hamina, or a base for the eastern Gulf of Finland.

Getting around

The centre on Kotkansaari is small enough to walk. For Karhula and outer districts use local buses (timetables at kotkanaikataulut.fi; tickets via the Waltti app) or a taxi. Bike sharing runs on the Donkey Republic system, about €1.50/1 h and €12/24 h. Trains connect Kotka with Kouvola and Lahti, where you change for Helsinki.

Watch out

Safety

Kotka is a calm small city; the practical risks are winter ice on pavements, dark early evenings from November, and cold water along the archipelago shore. 112 covers police, fire and ambulance.
  • Langinkoski fishing lodge was closed for the 2025 season due to budget cuts: check before you go.
  • Vellamo's ships (Tarmo, Kemi) close in winter and have a separate ticket.
  • Haukkavuori observation tower opens only mid-June to mid-August, Tue–Sat 12:00–18:00.
  • Some coaches from Lappeenranta and Russia stop only at Karhula, 9 km (5.6 mi) from the centre.
  • Kotkan Meripäivät in late July fills the guest marina and hotels: book ahead.
