Petaling Jaya is Malaysia's first planned town (1954) and now a spread-out satellite city of about 640,000 people on Kuala Lumpur's western edge. It has no single sight that justifies a trip: what it has is hawker food, night markets and megamalls, plus the Kelana Jaya LRT line that links it to KL in about 20–30 minutes. Addresses run on section codes (S, SS, PJU, PJS) and roads are numbered, so navigation, not sightseeing, is the real work here.

Getting around

PJ is spread out and built for cars. The Kelana Jaya LRT line is the one reliable spine: Taman Jaya, Asia Jaya, Taman Paramount, Taman Bahagia and Kelana Jaya stations cover the centre. KTM Komuter stops at Jalan Templer, Kampung Dato Harun, Seri Setia and Setia Jaya. Rapid KL buses run hub-and-spoke from the LRT stations and Bandar Utama, but routes are complex and slow. For anything off the LRT line, use e-hailing (Grab) rather than hunting a taxi: roaming taxis are scarce in PJ.

Safety

PJ is a normal, low-drama Malaysian city: the real risks are traffic (cross at signals, not between cars), snatch thefts near night markets and LRT exits after dark, and heat. Keep bags zipped and in front; drink water.
  • Traffic on the Federal Highway and LDP is heavy at rush hour; add 30–45 min to any road plan.
  • Addresses use section codes (SS 21/58, PJU 7/3) and roads are numbered — save the map pin, not the address, before you leave.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common; carry a light rain layer.
  • Night-market stalls are cash-first; keep small notes.
  • Some stalls close during Ramadan daytime — check before a food-specific trip.
