Waterville is a 16,000-person mill city on the Kennebec River, halfway between Portland and Bangor on I-95 and home to Colby College. Its draw is a compact downtown, Maine's largest art museum on a hilltop campus, and a 1903 footbridge to Winslow. It is a stop of a few hours or one night, not a destination week.

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over 3 mi between downtown, the river and the Colby hilltop. Kennebec Explorer runs two weekday bus routes (downtown–Kennedy Memorial Drive and downtown–Fairfield); no Sunday service. Taxis and rideshare exist but are thin; book ahead for early departures.
