Hemmingford is a village of about 830 people inside a farming township of about 2,000, 60 km south of Montréal on Route 219/202 and a few minutes from the US border. Its draw is Parc Safari, an African-style drive-through zoo, plus apple orchards, cideries and one small winery. There is no rail service and almost nothing to see in the village itself, so treat it as a car day out from Montréal or a border overnight, not a destination.

Getting around

You need a car. There is no passenger train or useful bus to Hemmingford; the old Montréal–New York line through the village is long gone. Route 219 runs north–south through the village and Route 202 east–west; Autoroute 15 is about 10–15 min east. Inside Parc Safari some sections are walked and others must be driven in an enclosed vehicle.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are rural driving (deer at dusk, winter ice), the unmarked border line near Roxham Road, and heat and long walks at Parc Safari in July.
  • No car, no trip: no rail or bus service reaches the village.
  • Parc Safari runs late spring to early autumn only; outside that window the main reason to come is gone.
  • Orchard and cidery opening days are seasonal and short — call or check the site before driving out.
  • The Roxham Road crossing area near the border has been a migrant route since 2017; do not wander onto the border line, and carry ID.
  • Cell coverage is fine in the village but patchy on the back roads and at the border.
