Toulouse

Give Toulouse 2 nights: one full day for the pink-brick old town and one for Cité de l'Espace or Airbus. Base east of the Garonne, walk everywhere.

Toulouse is France's fourth-largest city, built in pink terracotta brick on the Garonne between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The historic core is compact and walkable; the aerospace sights (Cité de l'Espace, Airbus) sit outside it and each eat half a day. Two nights covers the city; add a third for a Canal du Midi or Pyrenees day.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • France and Monaco ↗France has run temporary identity checks at its internal Schengen land borders since 2015; carry a passport or EU/EEA national ID on trains and buses from Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Luxembourg.
  • France and Monaco ↗Nights in France and Monaco draw on the same Schengen 90-in-180-day allowance as the rest of the area; Monaco does not reset or pause it.
  • France ↗France is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors' fingerprints and photo at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • France ↗TGV (including the low-cost Ouigo) and Intercités night trains need a seat reservation: a rail pass alone does not let you board.
  • France ↗Paris, Lyon and other large cities run low-emission zones that require a Crit'Air sticker on cars; check before you drive a hire car or your own car into a city.
  • France ↗Carry your passport or national ID card: police can ask for identification, and hotels register foreign guests.

Getting around

The old centre is compact and best on foot. Tisséo runs metro A and B, trams T1 and the cable car; a single ticket from a machine is €1.80 (€2.50 on board), a day pass €6.90, valid for transfers within one hour. Bikes: a one-day Tisséo Vélô ticket is about €1.20 with the first 30 min free. Don't drive into the centre; use a park-and-ride at a metro or tram stop.

Capitole / Carmes

The pedestrianised core east of the Garonne; walk to Saint-Sernin, Jacobins and the river. Best for a first trip.

Matabiau station area

Around the main rail and bus stations; practical for an early train or a one-night stop, less atmospheric.

Saint-Cyprien / west bank

Across the Pont-Neuf; quieter, near Les Abattoirs, 10–15 min walk to the Capitole.

Watch out

Safety

Toulouse is a safe big city by day; the real risks are summer heat, pickpockets around the Capitole and metro, and late-night bar streets. Standard city precautions apply.
  • Metro access at Matabiau station is under maintenance until mid-2026: allow about 10 extra minutes to walk around to line A, or use Jeanne d'Arc on line B.
  • Summer afternoons hit 28–29°C (82–84°F); do the churches and museums in the morning.
  • Some museums close on Mondays or have seasonal hours: check the official site before you go.
  • Pickpockets work the Capitole square and metro in tourist season; keep bags zipped.
