Biella is a wool town of about 46,000 people in the foothills of the Biellese Alps, 80 km northeast of Turin and the same distance west of Milan. It splits into a lower town (Biella Piano) and a medieval upper town (Biella Piazzo) linked by a funicular. The reason to come is the Sanctuary of Oropa, a UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage site 13 km uphill, plus the textile outlets and the Alpine sanctuaries around it. Two nights covers the town and Oropa without rushing.

Getting around

The centre is walkable; the climb to Piazzo is tiring on foot, so use the funicular between Via Curiel (Piano) and Via Avogadro (Piazzo). ATAP runs city and suburban buses, including services up to Oropa. A car makes the sanctuaries, Candelo and the outlets far easier; without one you are tied to bus times.

Safety

Biella is a low-crime small city; the real risks are the uphill drive to Oropa, fast valley roads, and mountain weather. Standard precautions in the station area at night.
  • Oropa is 13 km uphill from town: check ATAP bus times before you rely on them, and note the last return.
  • Many sanctuary and museum interiors close at midday and on one weekday: check the official site before travelling.
  • Outlet stores keep shop hours, not tourist hours; some close Sunday and Monday morning.
  • Mountain weather turns fast above 1,000 (≈ US$1,200) m: carry a shell even on a clear morning.
  • ZTL camera zones apply in the old centre if you drive; park outside and walk in.
