- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Dearborn is a Wayne County city of about 98,000 people, 25 minutes west of downtown Detroit by car and on the Amtrak Wolverine line. It is the birthplace of Henry Ford and still the Ford Motor Company's world headquarters, and it holds the most concentrated Arab American population in the Western Hemisphere. Almost every visitor comes for The Henry Ford complex — the museum, Greenfield Village and the Rouge factory tour — which alone takes two days. The rest of the city is a working suburb with a strong Middle Eastern restaurant strip on Michigan Avenue.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: sights sit 3–6 km apart along Michigan Avenue and Oakwood Boulevard, and buses run infrequently. SMART buses serve the suburbs and stop at the John D. Dingell Transit Center on Michigan Avenue; the Amtrak Wolverine calls there several times daily between Pontiac, Detroit, Ann Arbor and Chicago. Rideshare works but wait times stretch outside the centre. The Rouge Gateway Trail runs north from near the transit centre toward Northville for bikes.

Watch out
Safety
- Distances between sights are longer than they look on a map; plan on driving or rideshare.
- Winter ice and lake-effect snow make pavements and car parks slippery from December to February.
- The Rouge factory tour is a working plant: production-line viewing can be suspended on short notice — check before you buy.
- Some Dearborn restaurants are alcohol-free; ask before assuming a bar list.
