Richmond is a small Bluegrass city of about 31,000 people, 50 km south of Lexington on I-75, and the seat of Madison County. It is best known as the home of Eastern Kentucky University and as the site of an 1862 Civil War battle. Two state-park-grade sights sit just outside town, so most travellers use it as a half-day stop on the Lexington–Berea run rather than a destination in itself.

A car is the practical choice: the battlefield, Fort Boonesborough and White Hall are 10–25 min out of town and not served by useful transit. Downtown is small enough to walk. Rideshare coverage is thin; local taxi firms exist.

Safety

Low-risk small city; the real issues are rural roads at night, deer on KY 52 and summer heat on the battlefield walk. Standard US precautions apply downtown after dark.
  • Distances between sights are rural: without a car you will miss most of them.
  • Some areas inside the city limits voted themselves dry: alcohol rules vary by address.
  • Summer afternoons are hot and humid; do the battlefield walk early.
  • White Hall is closed November–March: check before driving out.
