Karumba
Go for 2 nights as a Gulf stop on the Savannah Way: sunset over the gulf, barramundi, prawn trawlers. Skip if you want surf beaches or a big town.
Karumba is a small prawning and fishing town at the mouth of the Norman River, and the only place on the Gulf of Carpentaria you can reach on sealed road. It splits into Karumba Town on the river and Karumba Point on the beach 4 km away. People come for gulf sunsets, barramundi fishing, bird-filled wetlands and a plate of prawns, not for shopping or nightlife.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

You need a car. Karumba Town and Karumba Point are about 4 km apart, linked by a 3.8 km gravel walking and cycling path through wetlands; it can be muddy after rain. Fuel up in Normanton if you are unsure about supply here.

Watch out
Safety
- Wet season (roughly Dec–Mar) can flood the Normanton road and cut access: check road conditions before driving.
- Saltwater crocodiles live in the estuaries and river mouth: do not swim or stand at the water's edge.
- Distances are long and mobile coverage can be patchy outside town: carry water, fuel and a spare tyre.
- Book accommodation and fishing charters ahead in the dry-season peak (roughly Jun–Aug).
