Whanganui is a river-mouth town of about 40,000 on the west coast of the North Island, founded in 1840 and one of the country's oldest European settlements. The draw is the Whanganui River — legally a person — plus a compact arts and heritage centre you can walk in an afternoon. It sits 2.5 h from Wellington by road and is a natural overnight stop between Wellington and Taranaki or the central plateau.

Getting around
The centre is flat and walkable: Victoria Avenue, the riverfront and the gallery are within 15 minutes on foot. City buses leave roughly hourly from Maria Place Extension; taxis are the fallback. A car is needed for Bason Botanic Gardens, Castlecliff and Pipiriki.
