Go as a half-day from Orvieto, not a base: cross the footbridge early, see it in 2–3 hours, sleep in Bagnoregio or Orvieto.
Civita is a hilltop village of about 14 year-round residents, reachable only on foot across a steep stone footbridge from Bagnoregio. There is no traffic, no station and almost no flat ground. Two to three hours covers it; the reason to stay overnight is to see the village after the day-trippers leave. Base in Bagnoregio (20 min walk from the bridge) or Orvieto, 30–40 min by bus.
