YerevanԵրևան

Yerevan is a compact, hilly city with a hot summer: do the Cascade, Matenadaran and the memorial before 11:00, sit indoors at midday, and take the square and the streets after 18:00.

  • Caucasus ↗The Armenia–Azerbaijan and Armenia–Türkiye land borders are closed; any route that crosses them is not a route, however short it looks.
  • Caucasus ↗Georgia treats entry to Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia as illegal; entering that way can mean arrest or a ban when you next reach Georgia proper.
  • Armenia ↗Armenia's land borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed to ordinary travellers, and several governments advise against or restrict travel near the Azerbaijan border (parts of Syunik, Vayots Dzor, Gegharkunik and Tavush). Read your own government's current advice before you book anything outside Yerevan and its day-trip ring.
  • Armenia ↗Check entry rules for your passport on the official Armenian foreign ministry pages; many nationalities enter visa-free and others use the e-visa, but only apply on the government portal.
  • Armenia ↗Cover shoulders and knees in churches and monasteries; men remove hats, and some women wear a scarf over the head.
  • Ararat Valley ↗Mount Ararat is often hidden by haze from late morning, especially Jun–Sep: go early and treat the view as a bonus, not the plan.

Decide

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Yerevan's sights fit in four short clusters inside about 4 km, and taxis are cheap. The trips that go wrong are the ones that climb the Cascade at 14:00 in July, arrive at 03:00 with no plan for the door, or visit Tsitsernakaberd on a closure day without checking. Four clusters cover a first visit; Garni–Geghard and Khor Virap are trips away from one kept bed.

Fits

  • Short city breaks
  • Monastery and manuscript trips
  • Evening wine-and-cafe walkers

Does not fit

  • Midday walkers in July
  • Wheelchair users on the Cascade steps
  • Travellers wanting sea or beaches

Don't confuse
Republic Square is the centre of Kentron district; the Cascade is a separate complex about 1 km north, and Tsitsernakaberd is a car ride west.

Hover, tap or tab to an area to see what it is like. Pins are sleep areas; arrows at the edge point to the airport.

Off the map: Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) (30–55 min by the usual route).

Where’s what, as a list:

  • Republic Square & Kentron: Evening cluster: the square and its fountain show after dusk, Vernissage market on weekends, cafés on Abovyan and Tumanyan; flat and walkable, with little shade in July.
  • Cascade & Northern Avenue: Late-afternoon cluster: climb the Cascade steps with a coffee, view Ararat at sunset if the sky is clear, then Northern Avenue and the Opera park after; steps are the cost.
  • Matenadaran & Mashtots Avenue: Morning cluster: manuscripts at the Matenadaran right at opening, then Mashtots Avenue cafés; a short uphill walk from the centre, best before the midday sun.
  • Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Hill: Morning cluster by car: the Genocide Memorial and museum on the hill above the Hrazdan gorge; allow 90 minutes, dress quietly, and go on a day the museum is open.
  • Sleep area Kentron (Republic Square): suits Families, older travellers, solo on a budget, price band $$.
  • Sleep area Northern Avenue & Opera: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$$.
  • Zvartnots International Airport (EVN), 30–55 min by the usual route.

Decide

The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.

You will like

  • Evening cafés and wine bars
  • Museums and manuscripts
  • Cheap taxis

You will hate

  • July and August heat
  • Long staircases with bags
  • Cold snowy winters

Arrive & move

Getting in, getting around, and your bags

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside a cluster; ride-hailing car between clusters.
Passes
No pass. A short taxi ride inside the centre is a few thousand dram; check the fare in the app before you ride.
Last trains
Metro runs a single line with a fixed daytime schedule (verify the hours); taxis run all night.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Rule

The Cascade is a long staircase with escalators inside the complex: with bags, mobility limits or a stroller, take the escalators or a car to the top terrace and walk down.
Lockers
Few public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
No forwarding service culture; keep the big bag at the Yerevan hotel for trips away.
Dead zone
Early-morning flights: ask the hotel to book the airport car the night before.

Money

What a day costs at three comfort levels, and how to pay.

Budget
֏15,000–25,000 excl. bed / day
Mid
֏25,000–50,000 excl. bed / day
High
֏50,000+ excl. bed / day
IC card
No transit card needed: taxis and walking; the metro is a single line and a token or card ride is cheap.
Cash rule
Keep ֏10,000 in small notes; withdraw at bank ATMs or inside malls, not on dark side streets.

Survive

Safety basics, the lines not to cross, and practical habits that save the day.

Safety

  • Cross at signals; drivers rarely stop for pedestrians.
  • Heat (Jun–Aug): AC stop every 60–90 minutes; drink water; sun on the Cascade steps is strong.
  • Emergency: 112.

Red lines

  • Tsitsernakaberd: quiet voices, covered shoulders and knees, no selfies at the flame.
  • Churches: cover shoulders and knees; take off hats.
  • Do not photograph military sites or people at close range without asking.

Practical

  • Toilets: cafés, malls and museums; carry small coins.
  • Tap water in Yerevan is commonly drunk; bottled water is cheap if you prefer it.
