San Francisco is a small Veraguas village about 15 km north of Santiago de Veraguas, off the Pan-American Highway at roughly Km 250. Its one real draw is the San Francisco de la Montaña church, a 1630 baroque temple with hand-carved altarpieces. Everything else — the El Salto waterfall, the Santa María river — is local-scale. You visit it as a detour from Santiago, not as a base.

The village is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. To reach it, take a bus or car from Santiago de Veraguas north about 15 km; local buses run on the Pan-American Highway corridor, but times are not fixed enough to publish — ask at the Santiago terminal. A car or taxi from Santiago is the simplest option for a half-day.

Low-crime rural Veraguas; the real risks are the unlit road at night, wet-season mud, and having no cash or transport plan back to Santiago. Don't walk the highway after dark.
  • Church opening is not guaranteed: it is an active parish, so check locally in Santiago before you go, or you may find the doors shut.
  • No reliable published bus timetable for the 15 km (9.3 mi) leg: ask at the Santiago terminal the day before.
  • Rainy-season mud on the road north and around the waterfall; wear shoes with grip.
