Braemar is a village of about 800 people in the eastern Cairngorms, on the A93 where the Dee valley meets the climb over the Cairnwell to Glen Shee. It is a walking and skiing base, not a sightseeing town: the castle, the river gorge and the hills are the reasons to come, and a car decides how much of that you actually reach. Public transport is one bus from Aberdeen, so most visitors use it as a stop between Aberdeen and Perth rather than a standalone destination.

Getting around
The village is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Everything beyond it — Glen Shee ski area, Linn of Dee, Glen Muick, the upper Dee valley — needs a car; there is no car hire in Braemar and the nearest taxi is in Ballater, about 17 miles away. Stagecoach bus 201 links Braemar with Ballater, Banchory, Crathie (for Balmoral) and Aberdeen, roughly hourly to two-hourly Monday–Saturday and about every two hours on Sunday. In winter the A93 over the Cairnwell and the roads towards Tomintoul can close in snow.

Safety
- No car hire in the village and no local taxi: arrange a lift or a Ballater taxi before you rely on one.
- The A93 over the Cairnwell and routes towards Tomintoul and Grantown can close in winter snow; check before setting out.
- Mobile coverage is patchy: Vodafone 4G works in the village, other networks may not, and there is no 5G.
- Hill weather changes fast in any month; carry waterproofs, a map and a charged phone, and tell someone your route.
- Midges are bad on still, damp evenings from June to August, especially near the river.
