Paterson

Give Paterson half a day, not a night: the historic court house museum (Sat 11:00–15:00) and a pub lunch, then check current Hunter line departures before planning the return.

Paterson is a one-street township of about 900 people on the Hunter River, one of the Hunter's oldest settlements and a former inland port. There is no hotel strip and no beach: the draw is a colonial court house museum, a rail motor shed and two pubs. It works as a half-day stop on the Hunter line between Newcastle and Dungog, or as a quiet base for the surrounding river flats.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

Walk. Paterson is a walkable town: the station is roughly 10 minutes on foot from the sights listed here. The 185 bus from Maitland runs on weekdays only, with no weekend or public-holiday service, so plan around the train.

Maitland or Dungog

Both are on the same rail line, 20–35 min away, and are the practical fallback if Paterson has no room — check current listings.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet town; the practical risks are summer heat, road edges after rain and the thin train and bus timetable that can strand you if you miss the last service. Check local conditions and current timetables before you travel.
  • Trains are few: about five services a day on weekdays and three at weekends, so check the timetable before you commit.
  • The 185 bus does not run on weekends or public holidays.
  • Food and drink shut early; the cafe opens from 06:30 on weekdays but the town is very quiet after dark.
  • Summer heat and afternoon storms; there is little shade along the river flats.
