Ungaran
Use Ungaran as a half-day or one-night stop from Semarang: temples, a Dutch fort and hill air, not a base for more than a night.
Ungaran is the capital of Semarang Regency, 25 km south of Semarang on the lower slopes of Mount Ungaran, so it sits higher and runs a few degrees cooler than the coast. It is a town of food specialities (tahu bakso, soto gudangan, beef satay), one Hindu temple complex, one colonial fort and a couple of short waterfall walks. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Semarang or a first night on the road to Ambarawa, Bandungan and Salatiga.

Trans Semarang corridor 2 links Sisemut terminal with Semarang; TransJateng buses run along the main road. Ojek and ride-hailing (Gojek, Grab) are the practical way to reach Candi Ngempon and the waterfalls. Downtown pavements are patchy — walk with care on roads without a sidewalk.
