San Leandro

Base here only if you want cheap beds and a BART line into Oakland and San Francisco: 1 night, or 2 if you use it as a car base for the East Bay.

San Leandro is a working East Bay suburb of about 80,000 people, founded in 1872 and once a cherry-farming town. It has little sightseeing of its own, but two BART stations, free-ish parking and lower room rates than Oakland or San Francisco make it a practical, economical base for the Bay Area if you accept a 25–40 minute train ride to the sights.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Two BART stations (San Leandro and Bayfair) run to Oakland, San Francisco and the airports. AC Transit and the free LINKS shuttle cover local streets; a car is easier for the marina and Lake Chabot. Bike lanes run along most major streets.

Downtown / Estudillo

Walkable core near the library, Casa Peralta and Pelton Plaza dining; San Leandro BART about 10–15 min on foot.

Bayfair / East 14th St

Motels and the Bayfair Center mall next to Bayfair BART; cheapest beds, most car traffic.

Marina / shoreline

Quieter, bay views and the marina; you need a car for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Daytime downtown and the BART stations are ordinary suburban-safe; the real issues are car break-ins at trailheads and malls, and unlit stretches of East 14th St at night. Keep bags out of sight and use rideshare after dark.
  • Weekday rush hour (8–9am, 4–6:30pm) jams I-580, I-880 and I-238; build in slack for airport runs.
  • Downtown parking meters fill fast: use the Estudillo garage, free but time-limited.
  • Sales tax is 10.75%, and listed prices exclude it.
  • Some East 14th St motels are cheap for a reason: read recent reviews before booking.
