Place · The Quill trailhead & crater
The Quill
Go at first light: the crater trail is steep and takes about three hours round trip, and the rainforest inside is best before the heat and afternoon cloud.

- Caribbean ↗Several islands (Turks and Caicos above all, also the Bahamas and Jamaica) jail visitors for a single stray bullet or cartridge in their luggage; empty every bag and pocket before you pack.
- Caribbean ↗From August to October keep a free last day before your flight home and check the national hurricane centre daily; airports close when a named storm approaches.
- Caribbean ↗Wearing camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in several islands, including Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica; leave it at home, children's clothes included.
- Sint Eustatius ↗Entry follows Dutch rules for the Caribbean Netherlands, which differ from Schengen rules: check official Dutch government sources for your passport.
- Sint Eustatius ↗The waters around the island are a national marine park: dive with licensed operators and follow park rules and fees.
- Sint Eustatius ↗Most visitors connect through Sint Maarten: book with enough time between flights and a buffer night on the way home.
- Oranjestad area (Sint Eustatius) ↗Hurricane season (Jun–Nov, peak Aug–Oct): book flexible fares and insurance, and do not plan a tight connection home.
- Oranjestad ↗Steep lanes and uneven paving in the Upper Town: bags go from the car to the door, never on a walk.
- Oranjestad ↗The ruins are protected: do not climb walls or take stones, shells or artefacts from the ruins or the beach.
- Oranjestad ↗Climb The Quill in the morning with water and grip shoes; the crater trail is steep and slippery after rain.

Know before you go
- The Quill is a dormant volcano about 600 m high. The crater floor is a rainforest with very tall trees, ferns and hanging vines.
- Allow 3 hours for the crater rim and a loop down, or 4 to 4.5 with the full circuit and photo stops. Numbers are 2026 desk estimates.
- Start at first light for cooler steps and clear views. Cloud often covers the crater by late morning.
- The path is muddy after rain and roots and rock are slippery. Wear shoes with grip, not sandals.
- A trail or park fee may apply (check with the marine and national parks office). Bring small US cash.
- Tell your host your start time and expected return. Phone signal drops in the crater.
