Çeşme sits at the tip of a peninsula 85 km west of İzmir and 10 km from the Greek island of Chios, so it works as both a beach base and a ferry port. The town itself is small — a castle, an old quarter and a waterfront strip — while the beaches, thermal springs and the village of Alaçatı spread along the coast. Most visitors are Turkish; international travellers usually pass it by for Bodrum or Marmaris.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Dolmuşes link Çeşme, Alaçatı and the outlying hotel strips; buses and dolmuşes from İzmir run frequently around the clock, about 30 min on the O-32. The otogar is south of the centre. A car helps for the beaches and Çiftlik.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Alaçatı

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Dolmuş from Çeşme centre, about 15–20 min

Stone houses, cobbled streets and a windmill; also the windsurfing and marina area south of the village.

Door to door: About 1 h

Bus or dolmuş on the O-32, about 30 min to the Çeşme end of the route; the full run to İzmir is longer

Museums, Kemeraltı bazaar and the Aegean city itself; doable as a day but better as an overnight.

Chios (Greece)

go

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h with border formalities

Ferry from Çeşme Port, 20 min by fast catamaran or 45 min by standard vessel

Four sailings a day in summer, fewer in winter; adult fare was about €20 in 2023 (check). Carry your passport.

Door to door: About 2.5–3 h

Drive or bus via İzmir, then onward to Selçuk

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep in Selçuk instead.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Çeşme town centre

Around Cumhuriyet Meydanı and the castle; walkable to the waterfront, restaurants and the port. Best for one night or a ferry departure.

Ilıca strip

Beachfront resort hotels with thermal spas, about 5 km north of town; dolmuş links to Çeşme.

Alaçatı

Stone houses and cobbled streets inland; a base for windsurfing and a quieter evening than the town centre.

Çiftlik and Altınkum

South-coast beaches and smaller pansiyons; you need a car or dolmuş for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Çeşme is a calm resort town and violent crime is rare. The real issues are summer heat, rip currents on windy beach days, and beach clubs or bars with no posted prices: ask before you order.
  • Beach clubs and some waterfront bars do not post prices: ask the total before you sit.
  • Summer traffic on the peninsula is heavy; allow extra time for the İzmir airport run.
  • Winter ferry sailings to Chios are fewer and catamarans are more easily disrupted by rough seas than the standard vessels.
  • The Lavrion (Athens) ferry has not resumed; do not plan around it.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for ADB: Havaş timetable field-checked, taxi fallback, late-arrival rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: castle and old town, Cumhuriyet Meydanı waterfront, Ilıca strip, Alaçatı village.
  3. Place pages with verified hours (castle, Ayios Haralambos gallery) and eat pages with last orders along Atatürk Blv.
  4. Ferry-day fixture for Chios so the port, passport and sailing windows can go green.
