Damascus is Syria's capital and among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Its walled Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, holds the Umayyad Mosque, the covered Souk al-Hamidiyeh and Straight Street, mentioned in the Bible's Book of Acts. The country has been affected by civil war since 2011 and a change of government at the end of 2024; infrastructure, safety and entry rules can change with little notice. Getting around

Yellow taxis and shared minibuses (microbuses) are the usual transport; agree a fare before you get in, since meters are not consistently used, and expect prices to change with fuel supply (confirm locally). Ride-hailing apps have little to no presence. Walking is easiest inside the Old City; do not rely on intercity buses without checking current security and checkpoints.
