Damascus is Syria's capital and among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Its walled Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, holds the Umayyad Mosque, the covered Souk al-Hamidiyeh, and Straight Street, mentioned in the Bible's Book of Acts. The country has been affected by civil war since 2011 and a change of government at the end of 2024; infrastructure, safety conditions and entry rules can change with little notice, so this listing is informational rather than a recommendation to travel.
