Great Missenden is a Chilterns village of about 10,000 people, 40-50 minutes by train from London Marylebone, and it is the Roald Dahl village: he lived here for 36 years and is buried in the churchyard. The High Street is short, the museum takes 1.5-2 hours, and the real reason to come is the walking in the Misbourne valley. It is a day trip or a single night, not a base.

Getting around

Walk. The village centre is 10 minutes end to end and the station is central. Buses (Arriva 48, Red Line 55) link Amersham, Chesham, Wendover and Aylesbury but run infrequently; a car is better for Prestwood, the brewery and the outer footpaths. National Cycle Route 57 and the Chiltern Cycleway pass through.

A low-crime village; the practical risks are traffic on the A413, unlit lanes after dark and muddy, slippery footpaths in winter.
