Mitzpe Ramon is a small Negev highland town of about 5,200 people sitting on the northern rim of Makhtesh Ramon, the largest erosion crater of its kind. It works as a one-night stop on the Highway 40 run between Be'er Sheva and Eilat, or as a two-night base for crater hikes, stargazing and the alpaca farm. There is no train, taxis are scarce, and the crater edge is a 10-minute walk from most beds.

Getting around

On foot, by car or by bike. Crossing the whole town takes under 30 minutes on foot. Long-distance buses make a small loop through town, so you can use them as a local hop. Taxis are effectively non-existent: arrange transfers in advance. Inside the crater your options are hiking, 4×4 or a guided tour.

Watch out

Safety

Mitzpe Ramon is a small, quiet town and crime is not the issue. The real risks are desert: heat and dehydration in the crater, flash floods after winter rain, unmarked trails, and firing zones that require Saturday-only or pre-coordinated entry.
  • Summer crater hikes: start before 07:00, carry 3–4 L of water per person, no natural water sources inside the crater.
  • Winter rain can cause flash floods in the streambeds; check the forecast and stay out of narrow channels.
  • Most trails cross army firing zones: entry only on Saturdays or with advance coordination, except the Israel National Trail.
  • Do not feed the ibex; it is prohibited and harms an endangered species.
  • The crater and surrounding area are a nature reserve: marked trails and permitted campgrounds only.
  • Shabbat: buses from Be'er Sheva stop around 16:00 on Friday and resume Saturday evening; some businesses close.
