Monterrey is Mexico's third-largest city and the industrial capital of the north, 200 km from the Texas border. It is modern rather than colonial: a big central plaza, a canal-side park on a former steelworks, a walkable old quarter, and the Sierra Madre rising straight out of the suburbs. Most foreign visitors come for business; leisure travellers use it as a 2-night city stop with serious hiking and canyon country on the doorstep.

Getting around

E-hailing (Uber, Didi) and walking cover most trips. Metrorrey is clean and cheap but has limited coverage; useful stops are Zaragoza (Macroplaza, Barrio Antiguo), Padre Mier, Parque Fundidora, Universidad and Central (bus station). Cash is being phased out on public transport: use a Me Muevo card from metro stations or the Urbani app, both rechargeable at OXXO. Buses stop only at marked stops, and not every stop has a sign. Taxis have meters — insist the driver uses it.

Watch out

Safety

Monterrey is a business city and the tourist core is calm, but it is not a place to wander far off the main streets at night. Use e-hailing after dark, keep to Centro, San Pedro and the parks, and check current state travel advice before driving the border highways.
  • Summer heat: June–September highs run 35 °C+ with afternoon rain; plan indoor or early starts.
  • Bus routes and timetables on Google Maps have been unreliable; cross-check with Moovit or ask at your hotel.
  • The Urbani app may not accept foreign credit cards — carry a Me Muevo card as backup.
  • Cross-border driving: use the Colombia Solidarity Bridge outside Nuevo Laredo if you drive from Texas, and buy Mexican auto insurance.
  • Downtown is quiet at night outside Barrio Antiguo; use e-hailing after dark rather than walking long blocks.
