East Grinstead is a small market town in West Sussex on the Greenwich Meridian, with one of England's longest runs of 14th-century timber-framed buildings along its High Street. Most visitors come for the Bluebell Railway steam line or as a quieter, cheaper base near Gatwick Airport. The centre is walkable in an afternoon; the surrounding Weald and Ashdown Forest need a car or a bus.

Getting around

The centre is small and flat enough to walk end to end in about 15 min. Metrobus runs local services and you buy from the driver; buses also reach Crawley and Haywards Heath. Trains from East Grinstead station go to London Victoria and London Bridge via the Oxted line. Taxis wait at the station rank; for the villages and Standen a car or taxi is the practical option.

A low-crime small town; the real risks are dark, unlit lanes on the walk back from the villages, fast traffic on the A22, and a last train or bus that leaves earlier than you expect.
