Moorefield is the county seat of Hardy County and the main town on the South Branch of the Potomac River, sitting on an unusually flat patch of land ringed by Allegheny mountains. It is a farming town, not a resort: you come for a cheap bed, a diner meal, and a short drive to Smoke Hole Canyon, Seneca Rocks or the fossil beds south of town. Almost everything needs a car.

Getting around
No bus, train or passenger air service: you need a car. US 48 is a four-lane divided highway for most of its length and links to I-81 in the east and I-79 in the west. US 220 is the two-lane north-south route through town. Fuel up in Moorefield or Petersburg before heading into the mountains.

Watch out
Safety
- No public transport of any kind: without a car you are stuck.
- Cellular data is weak to non-existent in places; the area sits near the National Radio Quiet Zone. Download offline maps before you leave the interstate.
- There is no cell service on US 48 east of town almost to the Virginia line.
- Deer on the road at dusk are a real hazard on US 220 and the back roads.
- Many small motels and diners have no website and irregular hours: call ahead or have a fallback.
