Princeton is a town of about 2,800 on the Crowsnest Highway where the Tulameen meets the Similkameen, roughly 3 hours by car from Vancouver and 1.5 hours from Penticton. It sits in the rain shadow east of the Cascades, so it is dry and sunny when the coast is wet. The draw is the old Kettle Valley Railway grade, a mineral museum, and river swimming, not a long list of sights. Most travellers use it as one night between Hope and the Okanagan, or as a base for the back roads toward Coalmont and Tulameen.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable: seven blocks of Bridge Street and five of Vermilion Avenue form a triangle with Highway 3, and most restaurants and motels sit inside it. For anything beyond that you want a car, bike or taxi. BC Transit route 50 runs to Keremeos and Penticton three days a week, and Mountain Man Mike's bus stops in town twice a week on the Kaslo–Vancouver run.

Sandy beach and a deep pool on the Similkameen; warmest water late July and early August. Buy food in town first.

Kettle Valley Railway grade to Coalmont

Door to door: Allow 2–4 h on the trail one way; a car on the Coalmont road is a separate trip

Walk or ride the rail grade from the Stout St trailhead; the grade runs about 18 km through a tunnel over 300 m long, past red ochre cliffs and hoodoos

Trail, not a drive: the outing is the grade itself. Turn back at the tunnel or arrange a pick-up in Coalmont.

Coalmont and Tulameen by road

Watch out

Safety

Princeton is a small, low-crime town and the downtown is fine on foot after dark. The real risks are the highway in winter, heat and no water on the rail trail, and long empty stretches of back road with no cell signal.
  • Highway 3 over the Hope-Princeton stretch can close or slow for snow, rockfall and crashes: check DriveBC before you set out in winter.
  • Fuel and food gaps are real east of town; fill up in Princeton before heading to Keremeos or Coalmont.
  • Summer afternoons in the valley run hot and dry; carry water on the Kettle Valley Railway trail, which has no shade or services for long stretches.
  • The KVR tunnel and trail cross private ranch land in places: stay on the grade and close gates.
  • Cell coverage thins quickly on the back roads toward Tulameen and Otter Lake.
