Lake Malawi National Park
Pay 2,000 MWK (about US$1.15) entry at the Cape Maclear gate, spend a morning on the Otter Point hike for lake and island views, and snorkel with cichlids in the clear water before the midday heat; skip the park if you only want beach lounging — the lake is free outside the park boundary.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
- Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
- Malawi ↗Malawi dropped its 2024 visa waiver for most Western passports in January 2026; confirm your rule on the official Malawi immigration e-visa portal before you book, not on agent sites.
- Malawi ↗Dress modestly away from lodges: shoulders and knees covered in villages and towns.
- Malawi ↗Do not photograph government buildings, police, the military or airports.
- Southern Malawi ↗Check 2026 visa rules for your passport; the 2024 waiver was reversed.

Lake Malawi National Park protects a sliver of land and the lake waters around Cape Maclear at the southern end of Lake Malawi. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the extraordinary diversity of cichlid fish — over 1,000 species, 90% found nowhere else. The park is small (about 94 km², mostly water) and the land section is a few trails through dry woodland and along the rocky shore. Most visitors come for the snorkelling, kayaking and boat trips to see fish and the occasional baboon troop. The park is managed by the Malawi Department of National Parks and Wildlife; entry fees are low and the park is easy to visit from Cape Maclear or Monkey Bay.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The park gate and the baobab tree are accessible by car with a short walk.
- The Otter Point trail is flat and suitable for most fitness levels, but not wheelchair accessible.
- Boat trips require stepping into and out of boats; not suitable for limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Do not touch or disturb the cichlid fish; they are the reason the park is a World Heritage Site.
- Use reusable water bottles and avoid single-use plastics; there is no waste collection on the islands.
- Support local guides and boat operators who follow park rules.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Lake Malawi National Park?
Entry is 2,000 MWK per person per day (about US$1.15 at 2025 rates). Vehicle entry is 1,000 MWK (check). Pay at the Cape Maclear gate.
What are the best hikes in Lake Malawi National Park?
The Otter Point trail is the main hike — about 3–4 km along the shore, easy and with lake views. There are also short walks to the baobab tree and along the beach.
When is the best time to visit Lake Malawi National Park?
The dry season from April to October offers the best weather and clearest water for snorkelling. November to March is wet and can be stormy.
Can I camp inside the park?
Camping is allowed only on Domwe and Mumbo islands, by arrangement with the park or a lodge. No camping on the mainland.
Is it safe to swim in Lake Malawi National Park?
Yes, in clear open water. Avoid shallow, weedy areas because of the risk of schistosomiasis (bilharzia). Check with local lodges about current conditions.
Do I need a guide for the hikes?
No, the Otter Point trail is easy to follow and well-signed. For boat trips to the islands, you can hire a local boat operator.
Can I see the cichlid fish without snorkelling?
Yes, from a boat or kayak you can see them in shallow water, but snorkelling gives the best view.
