El Paso sits at the western tip of Texas, wedged between the Rio Grande and the Franklin Mountains, with Ciudad Juárez a bridge-walk away. It is a desert city of 680,000 where Spanish is everyday language, the food is Mexican-first, and the main sights — downtown museums, the Mission Trail, the mountain road — are spread out enough that a car or a rideshare saves hours. A car or rideshare is the practical choice: downtown to the Mission Trail is about 20 min, downtown to Scenic Drive about 15 min. Sun Metro buses cover the city with a US$1.50 standard fare, and the free Sun Metro Streetcar loops 4.8 mi between UTEP and downtown, roughly 7:00–19:00 Mon–Thu, later Fri–Sat, noon–18:00 Sun. Taxis must usually be called.
