SandspitK'il Kun

Stay 1–2 nights: Sandspit is the airport and Gwaii Haanas gateway, not a sightseeing town. Base here only if you fly in late or join a boat tour.

Sandspit is the only town on Moresby Island and the island's air gateway: daily flights from Vancouver land here, and the Alliford Bay ferry links it to Graham Island in about 20 minutes. Most travellers pass through in a night, using it as the start point for Gwaii Haanas boat trips or the gravel-road circle tour. The town itself is small — a harbour, a grocery store, a golf course and a handful of beds — so plan your days around the water and the logging roads, not the village.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in about 30 minutes. For the ferry terminal, the golf course or the circle tour you need a taxi, the airport shuttle or a rental car — book the rental before you fly, as supply is tiny. The Moresby Island Circle Tour follows an active gravel logging road: check road status locally and expect logging trucks.

Airport Road

Closest to the terminal and the visitor centre; useful for a single night before an early flight.

Alliford Bay Drive

West side toward the ferry terminal; quieter, needs a car or taxi for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Sandspit is a small, quiet community and crime is not the concern. The real risks are weather, thin services and remote roads: file a plan before the circle tour or any boat trip, and carry rain gear.
  • Cell coverage and wi-fi are limited outside town; download maps and bookings before you fly.
  • The circle tour uses active logging roads — give trucks room and check conditions before setting out.
  • Gwaii Haanas has no road access and no services: permits and boat seats must be arranged ahead, and space is limited.
  • Weather cancels flights and boat trips; keep a buffer day before any onward international flight.
  • Ferry and flight schedules are thin in winter — confirm before booking a tight connection.
