Vrbnik

Half a day is enough for Vrbnik: walk the old town, taste Vrbnička žlahtina wine, and eat grilled fish. Skip it if you have only one day on Krk.

Vrbnik is a compact hilltop town on Krk's east coast, known for its medieval stone streets, cliffside views and the local white wine Vrbnička žlahtina. Most visitors spend 3–4 hours here, combining a walk through the old town with a wine tasting and a meal. It works as a stop between Town Krk and Baška.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • Croatia ↗Croatia is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Croatian sources for your passport.
  • Croatia ↗Book car ferries and popular catamarans ahead in summer; foot passengers still need to be early for the busiest routes.
  • Croatia ↗Split and Dubrovnik fine visitors for walking shirtless or in swimwear away from beaches; carry a cover-up.

Watch out

Safety

Vrbnik is very safe. The main risks are uneven stone streets and the cliff edge. Watch your step after dark.
  • Parking fills by 11:00 in July and August: arrive early or park in the bay lot.
  • Wine tastings may require a reservation in peak season: check with the konoba or cellar.
  • The cliff path has no railings in places: keep children close.
