Klaksvík is the second town of the Faroe Islands and the working hub of the Northern Islands: a fishing port on Borðoy, joined to Eysturoy by an undersea tunnel and to Kunoy and Viðoy by causeway. Most travellers use it as a bed for the Kalsoy ferry and the Klakkur ridge walk rather than as a sightseeing stop. Two nights covers the town, the mountain and one island day; one night is enough if you only want the ferry.

Getting around

The town is walkable: the longest useful walk, one end of the harbour to the other, is about 3 km, and most sights sit 0.5–2 km apart. A hire car helps for Klakkur, the Kalsoy ferry pier at Syðradalur and the northern villages; parking is easy. Buses run from the Bygdaleiðir station, and the Kalsoy ferry takes about 20 min.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are weather, wind on the Klakkur ridge, sheep on the road and single-lane tunnels. Tell someone your route before a solo mountain walk.
  • Weather turns fast: wind and rain at the top of Klakkur, so carry a shell.
  • The Norðoyatunnilin toll is collected on the return leg to Eysturoy, not on the way in.
  • Kalsoy ferry timetables are irregular — a few sailings a day, not hourly; check the day before.
  • Book the summer festival and any August beds well ahead; the town fills.
  • Sheep on roads outside town, and single-lane tunnel sections with passing bays.
