Mont Saint-Michel is a tidal island abbey in the Manche department of Normandy, about 4 h by car from Paris and 1 h 30 min from Rennes by bus. The walled village is small and can be covered in three to four hours, but the abbey, the bay walks and the tides reward an overnight stay. Most visitors day-trip from Rennes, Saint-Malo or the mainland hotels, and the island is busiest between 10:30 and 16:00 when coach tours arrive.

Getting around
The only way around the mount is on foot. From the mainland car park, walk the causeway (about 1 km) or take the free Passeur shuttle. Inside the walls, three routes lead up to the abbey: the Grande Rue, the ramparts, and the quieter Porte Échauguette.

- Never cross the tidal flats without a qualified guide and a checked tide table; the tide rises fast and the mud hides quicksand.
- Do not attempt the crossing when the Couesnon dam is discharging water.
- The mount has steep staircases and uneven ground; keep children close.
