Safety

Petersburg is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are cold water, weather and remoteness. Tell someone your plan before a boat or trail day, and carry rain gear every day.
  • Rain is the default: about 110 in (2,800 mm) a year, with roughly half falling in October–December. Bring waterproofs, not an umbrella.
  • Book the glacier and whale boats ahead; charters fill in summer and sailings depend on weather.
  • Cell and data coverage is patchy away from town; download offline maps.
  • Winter days are short and some businesses close; summer is the season for tours.
  • Tides and cold water: never walk out on the flats or take a small boat without local advice.
