DunoonDùn Omhain

Give Dunoon one night as a Cowal base, not a day trip: the Gourock ferry is 25 min, but buses are sparse and nothing runs on Sunday.

Dunoon is the ferry port and only town on the Cowal peninsula, 30 miles (48 km) from Glasgow but cut off by Loch Long to the east and Loch Fyne to the west. Most visitors arrive on the 25-minute foot ferry from Gourock, walk the promenade, see Castle House Museum and leave. The reason to stay is the peninsula behind it: Benmore Botanic Garden, Kilmun Arboretum, Pucks Glen and the Argyll Forest, all of which need a car or a bike. Two nights covers the town and one glen properly; one night is enough if you are only passing through to Bute or Kintyre.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

You need a vehicle or to be a keen cyclist. West Coast Motors buses run sporadically Monday–Saturday and there is no Sunday service; the 486 goes north to Strachur and Inveraray, the 478 west to Tighnabruaich and Portavadie, the 489 along the coast to Innellan and round Holy Loch. Bike hire is on Wellington Street in town. Taxis are the fallback for evenings.

Dunoon town centre and pier

Walkable to the ferry, Castle House Museum, bars and the promenade. Best for a car-free night.

Kirn and Hunters Quay

North end of town by the Western Ferries pier; hotels, a holiday village and the start of the Holy Loch coast road.

Sandbank and the Holy Loch shore

One to three miles north on the A815; quieter B&Bs and caravan parks, still a short bus or taxi into town.

Further out (Loch Eck, Strachur, Colintraive)

Inns and self-catering for drivers; nothing here works without a car.

Watch out

Safety

Dunoon is a small, low-crime town and the main risks are practical: no Sunday buses, weather-cancelled ferries, midges in summer and unsafe castle ruins. Tell someone your route if you walk the hills, and carry a charged phone — signal is patchy.
  • No buses on Sunday: plan Saturday or arrange a taxi.
  • Ferries can be cancelled in rough weather; the road route via Rest and Be Thankful is the backup.
  • Midges are fierce near water and in woodland from July to August, especially at ruined castles.
  • Many Cowal castles are unsafe ruins: view from outside, do not enter.
  • Mobile signal is patchy 4G; 5G has not reached the area.
