Paracho is a Purépecha highland town of about 35,000 people in Michoacán, and it calls itself the world capital of the guitar: more than 200 workshops and shops sell handmade instruments, most of them along Avenida 20 de Noviembre and Avenida Independencia. It is a Pueblo Mágico, but the draw is the craft, not a sight list. One night is enough unless you are ordering a custom guitar or visiting during the Feria de la Guitarra in early August.

The centre is small and walkable: plaza, market, House of Culture and the main guitar streets are all within about 15 minutes on foot. Use a taxi for outlying workshops and hotels on the town edges; agree the fare before you get in.

Watch out

Safety

Paracho itself is a small, calm town and the centre is fine on foot in daylight. The real issues are the drive in, uneven pavements, and buying an instrument on trust: check regional travel advice, keep to the Uruapan–Paracho corridor, and never pay a deposit without paperwork.
  • Buying a guitar is a purchase, not a souvenir stop: check the instrument in person, ask about a case and about shipping or carrying it home.
  • Custom orders take weeks or months; agree the price, the woods and the delivery date in writing before paying a deposit.
  • Afternoon rain from June to September; streets are steep in places and pavements are uneven.
  • Card machines are not universal in small workshops: carry pesos.
  • Check current travel advice for Michoacán before you go and keep to the Uruapan–Paracho corridor.
