Dollar is a small Clackmannanshire village of about 2,800 people, 12 miles east of Stirling on the A91. The reason to come is the walk up Dollar Glen to Castle Campbell, a 15th-century towerhouse. There is one small museum, no railway station and very little accommodation, so most visitors pass through in half a day from Stirling or Alloa.

Getting around

The village is walkable; Castle Campbell is a steep walk from the centre (check the time), or drive to the car park half a mile below the castle. You need a car for Glen Devon and the wider Ochils. Buses: Midland Bluebird H2 (every 2 h, Mon–Sat) and Glenfarg Community Bus 23 from Kinross Park and Ride (hourly, Mon–Sat, about 20 min).

Safety

A quiet, low-crime village. The real risks are the steep, slippery glen path after rain, fast A91 traffic and thin mobile coverage on the hill tracks.
  • No railway station: Alloa is the nearest, then bus H2 or a taxi.
  • The glen path is steep, narrow and boardwalked in places; not suitable for impaired mobility.
  • Castle Campbell is seasonal (Apr–Sep) and the car park is a steep half-mile from the gate.
  • Mobile coverage has dead patches on the approach roads.
