Berwick-upon-Tweed

Give Berwick one full day and two nights: walk the Elizabethan walls and riverside in a morning, then use it as a base for Lindisfarne or the cliffs. A day trip from Edinburgh works by train, but an overnight stay gives you the walls, the river and a border-coast day.

Berwick-upon-Tweed sits two miles south of the Scottish border on the north bank of the Tweed, and it is the last sizeable town on the East Coast Main Line before Scotland. Its draw is compact and cheap: 400-year-old artillery walls you can walk for free, a riverside of three bridges, and a walkable old town of 18th and 19th century streets. Most travellers give it one night on the way between Newcastle and Edinburgh, or two nights as a base for Lindisfarne, the Border coast and the Tweed valley. It is a town, not a resort: the beach is at Spittal, the big houses and castles are a drive away, and you need your own wheels for almost everything outside the walls.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The walled town is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes, and the walls, riverside, bridges and station are all on foot. For Lindisfarne, the Border coast, Paxton House, Norham Castle or Duns you need a car, a taxi or a bus; local buses run to Eyemouth, Galashiels and Wooler but not often. Taxis wait at the station and in the town centre.

Lindisfarne (Holy Island)

go

Door to door: About 45 min by car, plus the causeway crossing

Car or taxi via the A1 and the causeway; a seasonal bus also runs

The causeway floods at high tide and crossing times change daily: check the safe crossing timetable and never cross a flooded section.

Norham Castle

go

Door to door: About 20 min

Car or taxi via the B6470, about 7 miles

Free English Heritage ruin above the Tweed; open Apr–Oct daily 10:00–17:00.

Door to door: About 15 min

Car or taxi off the B6461, about 5 miles

Palladian house with guided tours and grounds; Apr–Oct daily 10:00–17:00, adult £15 (2026 estimate).

Eyemouth and St Abbs

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Bus 235 or car north along the coast

Fishing villages in the cliffs; the cliff walk from St Abbs is the reason to come.

Duns and the Jim Clark Museum

caution

Door to door: About 35 min

Car via the A6105, about 17 miles

Small museum, Apr–Oct Thu–Tue 11:00–15:00, adult £9.50 (2026 estimate); pair it with Duns Castle grounds.

Edinburgh

go

Door to door: About 45–55 min train time, plus 10–15 min to the station and onward city travel

East Coast Main Line train from Berwick station

Trains run once or twice an hour; a day trip works, but Edinburgh deserves its own nights.

Old town inside the walls

Castlegate, Hide Hill and Sandgate: walk to walls, river and most restaurants. Best for a short stay without a car.

Riverside and Quay Walls

Granary and Dewars Lane area by the Tweed; quiet, close to the bridges and the boat landing stage.

Station and Railway Street

B&Bs and a hotel beside the station; practical for one night with bags and an early train.

Spittal and the south bank

Across the river: sandy beach and caravan site, but a 20–25 min walk or short drive into the old town.

North Road retail park

Chain hotel and supermarket a mile north of town on the A1 side; only worth it with a car.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are the tide on the Lindisfarne causeway, fast traffic on the A1, and unlit cliff paths after dark.
  • Berwick Barracks and its museum are closed until 2028: check before you plan around them.
  • The bus to Lindisfarne runs only on some days and its times follow the tides: check the day before.
  • Coastal wind and rain arrive fast even in summer: bring a waterproof layer.
  • The A1 north of Newcastle is only partly dual carriageway; allow extra time by road.
  • The border itself is a layby on the A1 with fast traffic: not worth stopping for a photo.
